Introduction

Food safety is one of the most important concerns in the food industry. Whether it is a restaurant, food manufacturer, food delivery service, grocery store, or packaged food company, ensuring that food products are safe for consumption is essential. In India, food businesses are regulated by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Any business involved in the manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, distribution, or sale of food products must obtain FSSAI Registration or License.

FSSAI registration is a mandatory certification issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It ensures that food products undergo quality checks and comply with safety standards set by the government.

Obtaining FSSAI registration helps food businesses operate legally, build trust with customers, and maintain food safety standards. It is required for businesses ranging from small food vendors and home-based food businesses to large food manufacturing companies.

What is FSSAI?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It is responsible for regulating and supervising food safety standards across the country.

The main objective of FSSAI is to ensure that food products are safe, hygienic, and suitable for human consumption. The authority sets guidelines, regulates food businesses, and monitors the quality of food products sold in India.

FSSAI registration assigns a 14-digit registration or license number to food businesses. This number must be printed on food packages and displayed in food establishments.

What is FSSAI Registration?

FSSAI registration is a certification that allows food businesses to legally operate in India. It confirms that the business follows proper food safety guidelines and maintains hygiene standards.

Any individual or company involved in the food business must obtain FSSAI registration before starting operations. This includes activities such as:

  • Food manufacturing

  • Food processing

  • Food packaging

  • Food distribution

  • Food storage

  • Food transportation

  • Food sales

Even small businesses such as street food vendors, home kitchens, small restaurants, and food stalls require FSSAI registration.

Food Safety Assurance

The registration ensures that the business follows proper food safety practices, which helps maintain the quality and hygiene of food products.

Builds Consumer Trust

Customers are more likely to trust businesses that have an FSSAI license because it indicates that the food products meet government safety standards.

Business Expansion

Many large retailers, supermarkets, and online food delivery platforms require FSSAI registration before partnering with food businesses.

Brand Reputation

Displaying the FSSAI license number on food packaging improves brand credibility and reputation.
